Not Ending a Sentence With a Preposition

CS Lewis called it a "frenchified schoolroom superstition." Three words, three devastating insults.  Efficient.

My mother had no truck w/ prepositions at the end of a sentence. "Arrgh! You sound like a hick!" My mother was from Montana.

Which reminds me of a joke: A southern woman plunked herself down in a seat on the plane, settled herself, smiled, and said to the woman next to her "So! Where y'all from?"

"A place where we don't end a sentence with a preposition," the other said primly.

The southern gal thought for a bit. "So! Where y'all from, bitch?"

Some prepositions are just made to end a sentence with.

And I always say "Whence comest thou?"
