Sam over at The Ernest Chronicler put up a YouTube of girls singing harmony, which inspired me to follow suit. I think this is the only religious song the Roches ever did.
In addition, they sang "For Unto Us A Child Is Born," also from The Messiah, on an album devoted to Christmas carols and tunes. That album (one of my all-time favorites) contains several religious songs, including "Star of Wonder" (written, I think, by the middle sister)--an outstanding modern carol about the birth of Jesus from the perspective of a feminist shepherd.
I can't help but think of the day when ALL creation will sing this for real. There is something strangely thrilling about hearing the Roches of all people (whom I assume really don't BUY into what they are actually singing) doing this so beautifully. Yet someday we may all be singing it together. Perhaps there is some truth to Dostoeyevsky saying, "We are redeemed by beauty."
