The lyrics are from Habakkuk, and were first put to liturgical use in the 3rd Century. This music and translation are much more recent, obviously. Mid 18th C.
One of my favorites, which by good fortune wasn't removed from the Episcopal Hymnal in the disastrous 1980 reworking. We sing it most years. I need to memorize a good alto part for it, because the harmonies are too archaic for me to ad lib successfully.
