Anniversary

Yesterday came and went without my noticing it.  I quit smoking a year ago.  I don't miss it.  Very occasionally, the idea of sitting alone with a night cigarette appeals, but it doesn't last.  I sometimes notice the smoke-smell on others and don't much like it.

All very anticlimactic

On the other hand, I haven't had a noticeable case of bronchitis since I quit smoking some years back. I don't even seem to get colds these days. There is, of course, the unfortunate tendency to pack on pounds.

That was a "tendency" for me anyway. What has resulted on that score has been an increase in exercise, a change in eating habits, and no weight loss.

I'd like to bid on discouragement, which seems to have a bright future here.

It seems that for many habits, the process of accretion is, if not slow, rather mundane and without fanfare. A bit here, a bit there, again and then again. The turning point between choice and habit is unrecognized simply because it passes by so quietly. You can't see the growth of the roots both because they are underground and because it is gradual - and our attention spans for such things are short.

So...I can suppose it ought to be no surprise really when those kinds of habits are dropped and there is not much tooting of horns or marching of bands. I think this is likely even true in instances of going cold turkey. We quietly picked up our first several cigarettes and we quietly put them down again.

I know that sounds much simpler than it is.

Anyhow, permit a short toot and a quick step or two this little band. It is good to breathe.
