Although never a "member" (and a good 30 years younger than the youngest member); for about 7 years after finishing high-school, I seemed to be arm-twisted into performing at about 85% of the unpaid gigs of a dixieland band. Friends of my parents were in one. It specialized in doing dixieland church services ("It's been scheduled a long time, we can't let them down!") and memorial services ("It's what he wanted, we can't let him down!"). I found that leaving the USA for 15 years was an effective way to escape this duty.
