Whooping Cranes

Here in Aransas Co., right next to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, every afternoon this time of year we drive by the waterfront and look at the whoopers. Tall twin birds at the southern end of Manhattan.

Someone just told me earlier this week their population had dropped into the teens at one point, which I hadn't known. I thought they had bottomed out at around 50. There are a few hundred now.

They're not just in the exhibit area at the Crane Foundation--we saw a family of them in Horicon Marsh one year. (The chicks didn't survive that year.)
