It's an extremely tacky show with low humor, populated with unlikable characters. Very much in the category of "cringe humor", like The Office (British), and shades of Father Ted. And yet, I find it extremely funny. Enough so, that I will probably get a Netflix subscription for just long enough to watch the whole run, and the new Asterix show, too. There's a lot of heart to it, and the characters, while often awful, are genuine and human, and usually get enough of what they want, but also a lot of what they deserve.
I know this is the time and place the creator grew up in, and while I know only the conventional American knowledge of what was going on, I'm told it's accurate, and it feels genuine.
I heard enough stories about events like this that I believe it really happened (and note the jittery camera work, so it feels like you're really on the bus):
