I had thought the Ralph Lauren sweaters with their faux-retro appeal, rather ugly when I saw them individually. But when you look at pictures of them on a team marching in the ceremonies, they are much more attractive. I doubt that occurred to anyone who is planning on selling similar items to individuals, not massed ski clubs, but there it is.

Interesting. Our reaction was the opposite. The massed effect turned a design that was (charitably) retro-quirky solo into an ugly sweater party, as if the design was created for a single wearer to stand out in a group. I think RL designers would be likely to have that mode of thinking as well as considering the current 'ugly sweater' fad for commercial appeal.
