This is how conspiracy theories gain steam. The explanation of how the gunman mistook David Ortiz for some other guy in the Dominican Republic does hang together, but then the mind rebels and you go "Who in the world mistook anyone else on the planet for David Ortiz?"

Maybe the shooter was a soccer fan and didn't know other sports figures. _I_ didn't know who he was...
I wouldn't recognize him because I've never even seen a picture of him, as well as knowing nothing (zero, zip, nada) about him.
