I realized in the middle of Bible study some years ago that this song is a textbook example of worldly sorrow. At no point does the narrator express remorse for his crime; he's only sorry he has to face the consequences. True, he didn't mean to make his mother cry, but can he say the same about his victim's mother.
For the longest time as a kid, I subconsciously interpreted the lyrics as his mother being the criminal, and him taking the fall for her (mama, just killed a man....pulled my trigger, and he's dead)
