Recorded at a 1988 concert in Japan. I was listening to lots of Dowland at that time. There was then a local lutenist who had recently released on the 'Musical Heritage Society' label a well-reviewed LP of lute music (recorded in Japan!). And I (long story) had access to borrow a really good 7-course renaissance-style lute that no-one was using, by one of the top luthiers of historical-style instruments. Which is how I found myself taking private lute lessons for a little more than a year. When circumstances took me away from that city I had to return the lute. And such an opportunity didn't repeat itself. I do still sometimes window-shop for lutes online.

Sometimes I think my tiny audience is a microcosm for all the interesting things in the world.
