That sort of storm was unusual but not unheard of in Iowa, and happens more frequently relative to snow storms down here in Kentucky (one of the downsides to milder winters.)
Looks like an occluded front off the coast of Maine so warm air is being lifted from the surface by a thin wedge of cold air, freezing the rain as it falls.
If the next day is sunny, you get beautiful trees. Those whose branches didn't break, that is. We had a two-day sleet storm, and this afternoon the trees shone.
The beet juice trucks went out beforehand, and the plows eventually came around.
