Fur

Anti-fur activists are threatening a US figure-skater for wearing some.

Enhanced rights for animals will eventually mean diminished rights for (some) human beings. There is just no other way that can play out. Fantasies of kindness (as opposed to acts of kindness), are actually disguised fantasies of cruelty.

Fantasies of kindness/fantasies of cruelty...Here's Sebastian Haffner, who grew up in 1920s & 1930s Germany, comparing a Communists and a Nazis that he knew well:

"They both came from the ‘youth movement’ and both thought in terms of leagues. They were both anti-bourgeois and anti-individualistic. Both had an ideal of ‘community’ and ‘community spirit’. For both, jazz music, fashion magazines…in other words the world of glamour and ‘easy come, easy go’, were a red rag. Both had a secret liking for terror, in a more humanistic garb for the one, more nationalistic for the other. As similar views make for similar faces, they both had a certain stiff, thin-lipped, humourless expression and, incidentally, the greatest respect for each other."

In addition to continual abuse for being overly effeminate and gay, as well. You would think that figure skating would be a safe place for a homosexual male, but I guess not.

Anti-fur activists, meaning, as always, PETA. It's interesting to me that anti-fur activists can be accurately divided into two groups based solely on the organization they join: the ASPCA and the Audabon Society try to save and protect animals, PETA tries to hurt people who hurt/disrespect animals. The two societies, similar on the outside, fill two entirely different functions.

I have yet to see an animal-rights group of any kind protest the wide use of leather by motorcycle-riders...

For those that would threaten the life of someone for wearing fur that's not a bug - that's a feature.
