Halftime

I stood frozen in jaw-dropping horror in my son's living room. Daltrey and Townsend looked ridiculous. Their vocals were acceptable, and Townsend won me back a bit with his guitar work - plus I thought they arranged around the limitations of their vocal aging pretty well. But that coat. That scarf. How did the coolest guys of my generation (heh) ever think those choices weren't goofy? It was humiliating to watch them.

That usually happens to me staring into the mirror every morning. Not a pleasant sight. But, seeing myself looking back is a relief. The morning I don't see myself looking back, I figure the jig is up..
As for Daltrey and and Townsend, when I see them, I see my self's generation, and age-wise, I don't like it. Maybe you are like me, it really was not the coat and the scarf you didn't like...

But the light show was good . . .

Ern, possibly so.

Coulda been worse. It could've been AC/DC out there.

They happened 15 years later than The Who, and yet would've been even more embarrassingly old and pathetic.

How many more old rockers are they gonna stick out there to punish us for the Janet Jackson hullabaloo? The last six acts have been, in order: The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney. I love all those bands, but would it be possible to maybe swing in someone younger as a change of pace? Prince, at 51, is the young pup of this bunch.

It doesn't have to be some crummy flash-in-the-pan pop band every year, but... Coldplay? Green Day? Maybe a young gun and an old rocker together?

I just know that next year, it's gonna be AC/DC, or John Mellencamp, or, I dunno, Ringo Starr, and I just can't take it anymore.

Of course, this year, I skipped the halftime show entirely and played football, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.
