"The game of basketball is first mentioned in a work published in Frankfurt a. M. in 1603, "Wahrhafte Abkonterfeiung der Wilden in Amerika", and was played for centuries in primitive forms in North America, where it became the model for a competitive game created by Dr. James A. Naismith"

Basketball, of course, is merely a modern offshoot of the jousting elimination rounds among Heidelburg University, Charles University, and Vienna University in the 14th century. They had to quit using horses when wooden floors became popular. Later, balls replaced lances, which kept getting caught in the nets.
