Renée Fleming being too "operatic" for what I expect. A really great one was done at the 2023 Winter World University Games at Lake Placid, a friend who is a singing teacher was somehow involved in 'coaching' 2018 U.S. bobsled Olympian Christopher Kinney who had been asked to sing the anthem, so of course I watched the opening ceremony. Other than singing in kids' choir he had never had any singing training, and it really is a beastly piece of music with the very wide range from lowest to highest notes.

Many in my world prefer the Renée Fleming 2014 version, but as much as I like the singer, it is not a performance that I particularly favor.

Whitney Houston's voice does nothing for me. Like Karen Carpenter, she always comes across as emotionally blank.
