Angel, for years until she fell apart when my youngest was 16. We were all sad and didn't have a topper that year. Since then, it's been stars since that angel can't be replaced. My youngest still has her but not displayed.
We always use a star. We have two, one I like and one that my wife likes. This year both are included in the display, but hers got the position of honor.
In my childhood it was always this art-glass thing that looked like a ball-and-spear finial. But sparkly like a star. I suspect my eldest sister has it.
