Belichick Politics

As I read complaints from conservatives about various Trump appointees, I am increasingly leaning to the GOAT coach who drafted and acquired talent by saying "Don't tell me what he can't do.  Tell me what he can do."  It's not perfect, but I think conservatives have swung too far in the other direction looking for reasons to veto someone.

All that practice, I suppose.

The Democrats have always had an easier time with this, though they appear to be drifting towards purity tests now. Their coalition in the past was much more nakedly transactional. "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine."

The old camps (pro-business, pro-defense, and social conservatives) of the GOP had a much more sub rosa agreement to not oppose each other's primary programs which encouraged vigilance for defectors. Old habits die hard.

I'm thinking a lot of the 'conservatives' complaining are more concerned with a 'not the way we've done things, and not the people WE would pick' attitude.

To be fair, I understand that. They're seeing something new, and they don't like it one little bit. Someone's in control who was actively screwed by 'conservatives' who disliked him for 'not being one of OUR sort', and who did their best to block everything he attempted.

So, y'know - after the last 4 years I'm pretty much willing to wait and see about the nominees. I don't think they'll do worse than Biden's picks - and since Trump seems to be picking for actual competence in their fields they might do a credible job.

Time will tell.
