Of course you're using "believe" in two different senses here. Assent/understanding vs trusting enough to shape your thoughts and actions.
Did Asimov believe he could fly in airplanes? Yes and no... (I sympathize with him--I have a terrible fear of heights--though airplanes are usually OK.)
