My reading of the polls is that Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Elon Musk ae gradually losing popularity. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party in general has cratered in terms of popularity. So collectively, we like everyone less. It sounds humorous, but I think it is increasingly dangerous.

The poll I watch comes out in July: Gallup's annual "Confidence in Institutions" poll. It used to be that the Supreme Court and the Presidency both did well, but in the last decade they no longer gain majority faith regardless of who is in office. Only the police and the military, among governing institutions, still have a lot of trust -- and police, not the courts or the criminal justice system.
That is to say that Americans still only trust the coercive branches of government, the guys with the guns.
