The town my great grandfather left in 1881 at the age of 14 to go to sea, eventually coming to America after seeing Hong Kong and Rio

But it looks like the climate there is actually quite mild -- only February averages (just) below freezing.

The Gulf Stream goes all the way up Norway - Tromso has a climate similar to Boston - but I'm not seeing how it ducks in there all that much.
