Meaningless Graphics

Velvet Glove, Iron Fist has started an archive of meaningless graphics. They seem to be largely British, but they will look familiar in style.  This one's a beauty:

The blogger Christopher Snowden also seems to have a book out The Spirit-Level Delusion: Fact-checking the Left's New Theory of Everything. The site has a good sidebar, too.

The one of average #deaths/day vs delta-#deaths/day looks kind of cool, and might even be convey information if the numbers were scaled by total population. Although I don't believe the China numbers.

I suggest expanding the category into meaningless metaphors of all kinds. There's been a bank ad on TV for years that shows a group of motorcyclists, with a voiceover that asks, "What can handlebars tell us about..." The answer has something to do with guidance but there is no logical connection between handlebars and financial advice. Nor does the existence of handlebars or financial advice mean that this particular bank's financial advice is any good.

Words, still images and moving images may all be used to obscure rather than enlighten.
