The Skin Of Our Teeth

Christian Andrew, Son #4, just barely squeaked by (squoke by?) in Senior English - I think his average was 64.8 with 65% passing - and will graduate with his class. His entire highschool career has been marked by measuring exactly how much skin teeth do have.

This fourth child has taken more parenting than the other three put together.

  1. Whose teeth are being skinned here?

You are good parent, years of teaching middle school remedial gives me the authority to say so.

I really like (and "like" may be to faint) your column. I concur with roughly 99.8 % of your opinions.

Saying all the above, how does one squeek by with a 64.8% when 65% is the minimum? If a bullet just misses the target, it misses, yes?

Ah, I have been caught. I used "to" when "too" was the correct word.

However, this wasn't a test, or was it?

Frankly, even I have difficulty in enforcing the rules to the letter.

  4. Rounding up, apparently. Which would mean he had .3 points to "spare."

Or maybe the teacher just gave it to him at that point.

    AVI,

I struggle with "standards" all the time. This is due to my 32 years in the Marines....and my 2nd career as a college instructor.

The vast difference between the two (called the Great Divorce after the shutting down of the draft) is mammoth. National security implications are present.

My, my. How DID I get from a young lads' 2/10ths of a percent and such serious stuff?

There's always one, isn't there. Mine are young enough that, right now, I'm just not sure which one that is.

  7. tad, I think there are places to adhere to the strictest standards and places to let up, though I am not sure where those lines are. It would not have been a bad thing if Chris had had to take another English class. His first language is Romanian, so the complexities of expression in literature is his weakest area. And it would have been a good lesson for a boy who likes to get by with the minimum in some areas.

On the other hand, he has areas where he is more of a perfectionist than his brothers, so the skating by is not a general characteristic of his.
