The Red Sox are unraveling in June. They must have done this before, but I can't recall when. Huh. They find a new way to kill us every year.
While I am on sports news, Chris Wallace from the front office of the Celtics looks like he's going to go to Memphis to be GM. Hasn't Memphis suffered enough? They already lost out on the top two picks in the draft, even though their record was worse than Boston's. Than anyone's. If there are any Memphis fans reading, look, I'm sorry. You poor bastards don't deserve this.
No, AVI, they are not unraveling. They have lost 6-5, 5-4, 2-0 and 3-2. Blame the schedule makers! They made them play a rain-delayed Sunday night game (for a national TV audience, of course), then get on a plane and arrive in Oakland at 5:30 AM local time. Even professionals have trouble turning around and playing their best after an ordeal like that! And there has been quite a bit about the Red Sox having had a start like this in 2002 and then not even making the playoffs. But I'm not sure if the unraveling came in June or July. I think I've blocked that one out!
ReplyDeleteYes, close games are less of a worry, of course. Oakland has very good pitching, and I wish we were doing better against them, but our pitching has been good, anyway. And Jon Lester will be back soon, becoming the fifth starter, I think.
ReplyDeleteStill, losing 6 of 7 is never good.
Heh, wait till Beckett starts in with the blisters...
ReplyDeleteWith the fish, it seemed like the guy was missing at least 25% of the season.
At least he's got the rocks out of his head and finally realized the difference between throwing and pitching. For 7 years he'd just been a thrower (Brad Penny similarly underachieved because of rocks in his head)
A little too soon to declare an unraveling. They had a bad series against a decent A's team. They should have been able to hit DiNardo, though.
ReplyDeleteThe big problem is the dreaded NY team has now won, what, five in a row, including Clemens first appearance.
Yes, Oakland has the best pitching in the majors (San Diego is a pitcher's park in the the uh, National League - though I still rank their staff ahead of Boston's), even if their hitting isn't much. The Yankee's hitting has been decent, though not up to expectations, all year, so a pitching improvement makes them dangerous. The bad series against Oakland wasn't a terrible series, as michael points out, but I'd like to see us hit good pitching a little better.
ReplyDeleteWe're still the best team in baseball, we're 8 and a half up, and we're heading into a stretch where we're playing San Francisco, Atlanta, Seattle, Texas, Tampa Bay, and Toronto while Manny's bat heats up.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, the Yankees have swept Pittsburgh and Arizona at home. Not particularly wowing, especially when you figure they're about the play the Mets, who I think will be playing to kill.
I'm still not worried.
