Training

It used to be common in the generation before mine for Jewish boys to be taught a trade, preferably a portable one suitable for quick getaways under persecution, in addition to their academic training.  A psychologist friend had also learned to be a jeweler, for example. When he moved to a new state mid-career, he supported himself with the trade while he was building a clientele and reputation as a psychologist, and he still did jewelry repairs late in his career, when I knew him, partly for the money, partly because he just enjoyed it..

I don't think that is the case anymore, but it wasn't a bad idea.
