I don't remember much about Christmas in Trinidad, whereas Carnival is "seared into my brain." (Thank you, Senator Kerry.) Conclusion: while Trinis do Christmas, it isn't as important to them as Carnival is. Trinis are fairly self-critical, but NOT about Carnival. They love it!
