Education and Prejudice

Does Education Make Us More Prejudiced?

It depends. The story is usually that college makes young people more liberal, but it would be more accurate to say that it makes liberals more anti-conservative, and conservatives more anti-liberal.  The effect is stronger depending on the strength of belief. Moderates don't seem to move much at all.

  1. I remain friends with former colleagues at the university who are left-liberal, and two say they are retiring early because conservative students are now complaining about biased professors. I think this may be a face-saving excuse, but conservative students are certainly emboldened and on the lookout for woke professors. A conservative student is going to be "triggered" if he or she enters college knowing what to look for, since he or she will certainly find it, but the professors' bias may not be apparent to a conservative student who has not been prepped. Now the internet is out there to prep them and everything is different now. Sociologists will dismiss this as confirmation bias. Others will say, you can't unsee what you have seen.
