The Greater Male Variability Hypothesis at NNN. While males have greater variability on more traits, there are some on which females have more. And some that show little difference between the sexes.
Noah Carl thinks E-verify would be a better tool for reducing the number of illegals, but Republican interests keep opposing it. The Trouble with Trump's Deportations.
America's Water Is Too Clean. A great example of the law of diminishing returns in terms of health.
What the heck are chins for? by John Hawks. There have been lots of theories by some very smart people, but each hypothesis has acquired strong evidence against it. The last theory standing is that it is a spandrel, a byproduct of other changes. In this case the shortening of the face from smaller teeth, and a gestational need to take in amniotic fluid means the lower jaw must grow faster than the upper.
Veggie Tales Characters Aren't Christian A fun definitional dispute.
That article on E-verify is disingenuous in a couple of respects.
ReplyDeleteThe issue with violence surrounding ICE operations is entirely the fault of governments that refuse to honor ICE detainer requests, force ICE to find criminal deportees among the general population, and then incite people to interfere with those efforts. I linked to a map in a comment on a previous post that shows states with far more deportations than Minnesota that have no reported violent incidents because those states honor the detention requests, including such blue bastions as Illinois and New York. Louisville honors the detainers and I have seen no reports of any violent encounters involving ICE/BCP here.
While I don't doubt there is resistance among employers who profit from a pool of cheap easy to find temporary labor, there are other factors than wage rates in play. My understanding is that by law and policy E-verify can only be invoked once a potential employee has accepted a bona fide job offer though it is often presented in articles such as Carl's as if it can be used to screen applicants for legal right to work. Complaints about possible labor shortages may also be based on an employer who follows the law losing even legal temporary employees who want a guarantee of work.
Similar things have been mentioned here before, CB. Keep at it.
ReplyDeleteI do think that Carl is hoping for the same phenomenon as self-deportation, that stressing E-verify will even affect the decisions of many individuals who are not being directly challenged. I don't know that this is true.
