Israel is hard to see on a world map, even if one was still present. One of the difficulties for American students especially is imagining how little land they're fighting over; or why people don't just move, since it's only a few miles away that there are other countries run by co-religionists who also share your ethnicity.
The whole conflict requires a lot of teaching and imagination for American youth to begin to understand.
