It is much less speculative than it once was, for reasons I outlined in "Dead as a Doornail." HL Mencken or some such researcher a hundred years ago would have run across only a few sources of people describing an accent in a time and place. A lot of the work has been done now and we can be surer of whether those writers were accurate and whether there were exceptions.
