The Star-Spangled Banner tune "To Anacreon in Heaven" was written to be difficult, so that a vocal club could show off its skill. It's tough for a lot of us to sing. Maybe we should have chosen something else, but we didn't, and I wouldn't change it any more than I would the flag.
But man, you can really tell the difference when excellent singers really put their minds to it, can't you? This is how it should be.
Yes, this is how it should be. I've watched this several times and... well, I can't help it, I get teary eyed. That's why I consider this performance better than Whitney Houston's Super Bowl rendition. She was great, but I don't get tears in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteI definitely like the harmonies, which you don't get with solo renditions. Candidly, I wouldn't mind it if "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" were our national anthem. Though I suppose saying that sets me up to be accused of Christian Nationalism, I just love singing that song.
