I pledge to be a President who seeks not to divide, but to unify. Who doesn’t see red and blue states, but a United States. And who will work with all my heart to win the confidence of the whole people.
It is common for liberals to think of themselves as nonviolent, and that it is the other guys who are divisive. I usually try to break down such generalisations into categories and exceptions, but this one is pretty universal. That the opposite might be true is so shocking that it is immediately rejected without any pause to consider possible evidence.
And who will work with all my heart to win the confidence of the whole people. . . including all you white surpremacists, homophobes, neo-Nazis and other haters.
I am reminded of the conversation I had with a Colombian, a self-declared Communist, who told me that the Soviets had "gently" sent their troops to Czechoslovakia in 1968. That was the first glimmer into my realization that Third World Communists tended more towards the Soviet Imperialist side than they did to the Nationalist side. The Sandinistas provided more such evidence.
Ridiculous.
