The Flying Burrito Brothers started as a rock/soul band that couldn't keep a drummer - or much of anyone else, either. In the few years of its real existence it was constant lineup changes. They eventually settled on a rock/country/bluegrass fusion. They ended up being one of those bands that anticipated the trend to country-rock and were imitated by others more than having success themselves. They did a good job with this Dave Dudley tune.
This song refers to “a Georgia Overdrive.” As you probably know, that means kicking the thing out of gear when you’re coming down a mountainside and just letting it roll without the engine to break it.
This is also called a “Midnight Overdrive,” especially in Tennessee and elsewhere where the mountains are bigger than they are in Georgia.
Wheeling down the Grapevine after midnight with the shift in neutral and hitting 120 mph. In the dark. With louder and better music playing. I kind of miss those days when I used to commute to San Jose, San Francisco and Emeryville to and from San Diego. Life, work, fiance all calling from up north but balanced by life and a steady job down south.
