Soupy Sales was a guest star in The Beverly Hillbillies Season 8 Episode 13 , as Jetstream Bradford, Mrs. Drysdale's nephew, who was leaving the Air Force to become a VP at Milton Drysdale's bank. The show is about as entertaining as I remembered it. The Deplorables Strike Back!
Sitcoms of the day were very big on dragging stars from elsewhere in on the action. I understand there is something of that era in Quentin Tarantino's new Hollywood movie. I recall Donna Reed going to a baseball game and seeing Willy Mays, and Gilligan's Island landing B-list stars on the uncharted desert isle occasionally. So Hullabaloo, especially with its 50s dancers and 60s bands, a hybrid of the two eras, would be a natural for someone's agent to work him on to a show where he didn't fit in the least. Soupy's agent must have been pretty good at finding him extra gigs.
As for the Deplorables, those shows were a mixed message. Jed Clampett was clearly the only sensible person in either group, and Green Acres and Petticoat Junction were similarly stereotyped with almost everyone, city or rural, elite or salt-of-the-earth being foolish, except there was always one Deplorable who was actually the smart one, the quintessential American, who transcended his lack of education but was not fooled by the slickers' ways.
Soupy Sales was known by kids especislly for his White Fang (& Black Tooth) skits. Her is a compilation of White Fang ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n43zAbwtiaI
Soupy also was considered seriously for Johnny Carson's gig and he hoasted the Tonight Show for a period.
I hope the dancers were paid well.
ReplyDeleteWas Soupy Sales always like that? Was that some sort of parody of the Mouseketeers?
There's 154 seconds of my life I'll never get back...
ReplyDeleteI never watched Soupy Sales. Sample of one says "I'm a winner!"
ReplyDeleteThe Babylon Bee: Snopes will go nuts on this one.
