I just listened about an historical catastrophic climate change, in the early 3rd C in Central Asia. It killed millions of horses - the center of steppe economy - and people did not move south fast enough to avoid starvation.
It was suddenly much colder for a few years, then came back even colder for a few centuries. Historically, cold is a much bigger problem.
