I have heard federalists speculate that a return to state legislatures choosing the senotors for their state would be an improvement on the direct-election method. My son is a fan. It certainly sounds plausible.
It could hardly be worse, and it would at least reemphasize that Senators represent States not populations so you might get a little less of angst over both California and Wyoming getting the same number.
The late Zell Miller was an advocate.
