It is
interesting that studies try to focus on people who use only moderately. I think the general comparison is with those who use alcohol moderately - a couple of nights a week, a couple of drinks at a time. The expectation is that there are similar marijuana users. My experience is that there are, but not so many. I know people who smoke only a few times a year in exceptional circumstances, like camping far away from civilization, or smoke once or twice a month when they go out. But most people of my generation and the one behind me, move to daily marijuana pretty quickly.
I wonder what the distributions look like. They'd be self-reported, and hence probably a low estimate, but even that would be interesting. Presumably the "after legalization" estimates would be a little more accurate, but I suspect most stoners won't want to admit just how much they use, no matter how legal is may be. One could crosscheck by comparing the integral of the distribution to the estimated total consumption of marijuana.
ReplyDeleteI suspect a few of my older relatives are 'consuming' now. There's been a noticeable difference in mobility and... attitude over the past 2 years. I'm happy for them.
ReplyDelete"I smoke two joints in the morning, I smoke two joints at night; I smoke two joints in the afternoon, it makes me feel all right... I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints, and then I smoke two more..."
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure a large number of the pot smokers will NOT be going to the polls to vote -- they'd mostly rather relax.
And, frankly, society might be better off with them stoned out a lot, then drunk a lot.
But it's a human waste, in both cases. "Freedom to waste your own life" is an important part of what Freedom is.
If pot were legal and I could get past the inability to tolerate smoking something unfiltered, I'd be happy to partake now and then. I can't tolerate the idea of exposing myself to prosecution--just don't need the hassle. Without that threat, would I over-partake, maybe in brownie form to save my lungs? It's possible, though I don't over-drink, so maybe not. But having grown up around both pot and booze, I'll never be persuaded that pot is the greater danger. Not in the same ballpark.
