Another possible explanation for my lack of enthusiasm is that I am reading Timothy Snyder's Bloodlands, and not much that is happening around here seems important enough to mention.
It is exceptionally good. But it hurts to read. One wonders Is there anything that realistically could have been done to prevent this? I don't see what.

ReplyDeleteThat book's been sitting on my bedside table for years. I can't make myself read it. I feel I should try to understand what happened there, but I just can't make myself do it.
ReplyDeleteIt is a sobering and appalling read. I was aware of many of the facts it presents but had never seen it put together in quite that way. Anne Applebaum's Iron Curtain covers the aftermath in some of those countries.
