BTW, here's the Bridal Veil Falls near me: http://jlbussey.exposuremanager.com/p/19feb2006/mtindex0150 (If you follow the yellow lines of the road to the trees, just above them are what looks like four patches of snow on the dark shadowed mountain side. That's the four sections of the waterfall.)
To the base of the falls is a nice hike of about a mile and a half or slightly more with only moderate altitude gain. There is cirque at the top of the dark evergreens (you an see the trees slope down to it just left of center), which is another 2.5miles and 2500ft altitude above the base of the falls. The total is a pretty good hike, but that last mile is a bitch! Going up past Lake Serene does require equipment and is highly technical.
I've been looking through all of my hiking books, and it looks like most hikes here are constructed to not exceed about 1000ft/mile slope at any point. You have to bushwhack it if you want any steeper.
Lake Serene is gorgeous though! http://jlbussey.exposuremanager.com/g/lkserene
Every state seems to have a Bridal Veil Falls. I think that it must be some kind of federal law...

Those look pretty darn steep. More technical climbing than hiking, I'll warrant.
