Emerging Church dilemma: Can’t attack Gandhi, can’t defend Gandhi, what to do? Attack the people who attack Gandhi. Problem solved.
Pastor Piper punched...uh provoked? Pissed? Nah, that's going nowhere.
How do you do that tinyurl or similar thing? Or do you get those directions when you sign up for Twitter? And do I actually need to know? I forgot to include a link to Ben's post, BTW. I Think I'd Like To Go To Heaven. Is It Nice There?

ReplyDeleteOK, I finally figured out what you were talking about with all this Bell/Piper stuff! We don't read the same sites.
ReplyDeleteI'm as curious about the afterlife as anyone, but it strikes me we weren't directed to figure that out. If God had thought we needed a detailed understanding of who would be saved and when and how, I suppose He'd have been a lot more specific. What He told us was to keep our eye on the ball, i.e, on Him. We can perfectly well go on doing our duty without (1) guessing which theories about hell and purgatory are precisely correct or (2) reaching firm conclusions about how bad things will get for anyone who guesses wrong? It's pretty clear that if we turn away from God we've got to turn back. It's less clear what things look like at the far end of the road that leads away from Him, except that we won't like it.
It's not usually what I would follow either, Texan, but with Jonathan and Ben both interested, I got interested also.
ReplyDeleteOh, you obviously know a lot more about this stuff than I do. To tell the truth, if I don't read about a theological controversy here, I'm liable to miss it completely until it becomes front-page news, like the issue of gay priests and Anglican schism. That doesn't make me above-the-fray, just kind of ignorant.
