  2. What is the meaning of "Making it up" to someone, in this context? ;-)
Thanks for reminding me of this song.

When I worked in Venezuela, I had the acquaintance of a number of co-workers from Scotland. All the Scots I knew were very serious drinkers on their time off. They could each imbibe up to 20 cans of beer on a Friday night. Fortunately for our safety, they spent their time on the drilling rig drying out.

Several decades later, I was part of a group making a class presentation. The Dean of the school, born and raised in Scotland, was sitting on on the presentation. I informed him that I had worked with a bunch of Scotsmen in the oil field in Venezuela.

"Bunch of drunks, weren't they," the Dean replied.

Guess oil field people in Scotland had acquired a certain reputation.

Lest anyone accuse me of Scotsphobia or the like- not that one is ever accused of Scotsphobia- Scots and Scots-Irish comprise a substantial part of my family tree. IIRC, which is also true of AVI.

  4. Dubbahdee - with my typo "Sots-Irish" on a previous post, I was maligning a related, but different nationality. So I decided to kick their rivals as a recompense.

Are there Europeans who don't have a reputation for drinking too much?
