I grew up in an era when the mile record was broken by a little bit every few years and expected that to be normal forever. But that didn't happen, and the old record has stood since 1999.
The pacers just barely did their job - or one might even say that they didn't, as they dropped out a touch behind the record pace. If you aren't used to watching the lights at the runners' feet they display the world record pace, so you can tell at a glance if they are on it or not. For a while on the third lap, they were not.
