Two Fingers

Gypsies, now called Roma, pick up the music of wherever they are and inject a flavor in it from further east. That is less obvious with Reinhardt, who fused so many styles that there is no real tracing back. Yet he does sound more Central European than Western European, even late in his career.

I taught a simple song to Roma children in Budureasa,* Transylvania in 1998, a translation of an American song. They were singing along with me by the end of the first line, causing me to conclude some other American must have taught it before. Not so. They just sensed where it was going right away.

*You can read more of it than you think.
