Junk DNA

I guess it is more properly called "satellite DNA," and James has linked to an article about what it might be for.

Never been happy with the term 'junk DNA'...if you were looking at a very large and complex computer program, it would be really unwise to call any part of it 'junk' until you were absolutely sure that there were no possible logic paths in the code that you *did* think was important that invoked or referenced that 'junk code' in any way, or for that matter was acted upon by the 'junk'.
