I had a longer post about my ambivalence about Simon and his equating New York with America, all other places being exotic, culture changes, and The Graduate, but even I couldn't sustain interest in it.
It was a specific tactic of communists to repurpose hymns for the struggle. Sometimes it worked very well, as in "We Shall Overcome," and "Down By The Riverside."

I heard a lot old spirituals with "alternative" lyrics during the Act 10 protests at the state capitol.
