Masks

Remember that a bad mask is much better than no mask. Don't let the good become the enemy of the best.

A big point of masks in the present circumstances is to protect others if we unknowingly have this virus and are asymptomatic.

The big roundup of mask research at SlateStarCodex points out:

"Surgical masks are loose pieces of fabric placed in front of the mouth and nose. They offer very good protection against outgoing droplets (eg if you sneeze, you won’t infect other people), and offer some protection against incoming droplets (eg if someone else sneezes, it doesn’t go straight into your nose). They’re not airtight, so they offer no protection against airborne disease or the airborne component of aerosol diseases."

  3. SlateStarCodex is a source I trust. I should go over there during the virus controversies

  4. I'm not convinced aerosol transmission is common enough to bother with. I do think wearing a mask is an excellent way to quit touching your face with too-seldom washed hands. For that purpose, even a bandana is fine.

  5. I should add, I mean for most of us. There are different considerations for medical workers or home nurses having to get right up in the face of a patient who needs suction or the like.
