Discouragement

Looking for a post I put up in 2007, I wearily scanned everything I wrote in 2005-2007. I was impressed with how brilliant I was then. In fact, I wondered why I had bothered to write anything at all since my first ten months of blogging.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

My philosophy is, sure I'm getting dumber, but the good stuff still comes now and then . . .

I've changed somewhat from the man who wrote the posts 10 years ago. What I've been thinking about has changed too. So when I read the old posts they seem fresher, and point up things I haven't thought about in a while. So they seem more challenging, and therefore wiser, than the things I wrote more recently.

The more recent posts are fresher in my mind, and if I were to write them again I'd (I tell myself) write them better because I thought of new facets--so they seem inferior.

James, that is likely part of it.
