Guess The Country

No peeking. I keep wanting to give hints, but they would either be a)dead giveaways, b) pure snark, or c) both. If you don't get it at first, there are a few hints at the end.

  1. No peeking?

    Heh.

I have a suspicion that if I search for one of the words in the title, I'll get a city/state combination in Europe.

But I didn't catch the hint, whatever it was.

By the names and forint I would guess Hungary. They are wearing too many clothes for it to be Romania.

Not Romania, as I figure that with my Spanish I would be able to halfway recognize some words.

    Benko- sounds Ukranian.
Attila: Turkish or Hungarian (Attila the Hun) Attila is common surname in Turkey, and ATH is a bit of a hero in Turkey. But "The Hun" also suggests Hungary.

Which reminds me that growing up in an ethnic hodgepodge leaves one with an identification taxonomy of country of origin based on surname suffixes.

    -enko Ukrainian
    -insky Polish
    -ov Russian
    -ini Italian
    -ian Armenian
    -cek Czech
-ich "Yugoslavia" [too many countries now]
-ko Hungarian/Slovakian/Ukranian[that neck of the woods]
Hungarian- hard to find suffixes.Need the whole name to ID as Hungarian.

Not to mention French, Spanish, Jewish,German, Irish/Scottish.

Given the melting pot, the surname is but the tip of the iceberg regarding an individual's countries of orgin.

  6. esco or escu, Romanian. The suffixes usually mean "from" or "son of," don't they?
