Data Gathering

I am always uncertain how much to repeat themes from earlier posts. I don't want to be a one-trick pony, but I also know that regular readers come and go. Topics and observations that I believe are central to the blog's character were dealt with in detail months and even years ago, and may not be part of the mental furniture of many of you.

So, three things. I'm taking a survey here. Regular readers, how long have you been on board? Jonathan, Wyman, and akafred don't need to answer.

Second, those who haven't read the Extended Comments sections on the sidebar should give them a go. Looking at that grouping, I'm thinking there are probably other long-running themes that should be gathered into their own groups.

Third, I will revive the "Best of Month, Year" feature, for reading simplicity and my own mental organization. That tagging things into subjects has never seemed as efficient as it's supposed to be.

  1. I'm a semi-regular reader. I don't read every day, but usually check in a few times a week. I've known about the website for several years, but have probably only become a semi-regular reader in the past two or three years, I would guess.

I read your site in spurts. Found you originally through comments elsewhere -- neoneocon? maggiesfarm? No matter, your take is always worthwhile.

Glad you found David Friedman, whose seminal work "The Machinery of Freedom" was a huge influence on my intellectual development, as was his father Milton Friedman's work "Free to Choose".

Please keep writing. You have a bigger audience than you know.

  3. Regular reader, irregular commenter (if at all, I'm a slow and ponderous thinker and even slower writer). Quite a few years, although I don't remember how many off the bat. However, the last time you ran some "best-of" posts, I remembered reading some of them when they first posted, if that helps any. I like that feature actually, reinforces things.

  4. Two years (I'm guessing) a regular reader, but sporadic commenter. I like the "best of" posts also.

  5. I read relatively often, but I can't remember when I started. It's been years.

Yours is one of the most thought-provoking blogs I've ever found. I generally don't comment because I'm thinking. I guess I don't think at blog-speed.

I have read your blog for a estimated four years. I like the retro posts:they provide continuity and perspective.

  7. What seems strange to me is that even your repeats, old posts, and rehashes are interesting. The ideas, and expression, age well.

    But new stuff isn't bad.

I cannot recall when I began reading your blog...but the retrospectives are always intriguing.

  8. It's hard to believe that I've been reading your blog for at least 3, maybe 4, years. I think I stumbled across it when hitting the "random blog" button.

I thought..."Hmm this is an interesting mix of politics, religion, language(at the time you seemed to have a lot of posts referencing the OED) and bizarre ABBA photos...what's not to like?

  9. Language! I haven't done any in awhile. My children will curse you. Heh.

  10. I read you site in a manner much as Monique6ft does: in spurts. Your posts are well thought out and often require some deep thinking and reflection, which means that the pressure of the now often grants insufficient time. And so I mentally file it away in the "check on this later" category. "Later" might mean that evening; it might mean next month; too often it means "not yet".

You have enough variety of situations and ideas, that your blog didn't become repetitive back when I was able to read it daily. I still find them to be fresh as well as thoughtful.

Keep up the good work, and may God bless it, you, and yours.

I usually read every week, and down to where I remember the post, regardless. Good stuff!

As for how long, I don't really recall--3 years, I think.

I too liked the ABBA posts, and commented on what babes the girls were. My comments are irregular, much like verbs.

Ok, the last previous post I read was from June 5, but last weekend I was gone, and yesterday was too busy.
