All that matters is the direct experience of the ultimate.

The Zen Buddhists do it well; the best among them will tell you that it's impossible to know if you've had a mystical experience or not, because if you have all the walls will have collapsed. If you get there you wouldn't know it; there would be no difference between subject and object, between the observer and the observed. All would be lost. Since you can't say if that ever happened, you can only practice; you can't claim you succeed.

Lesser traditions end up breaking things that matter. Sufi Islam, for example, ends up losing what was great in Averroes; but they don't bring anything better about. Maybe they bring something worse, because rationality washes out of the faith in favor of a limited direct experience of God.Grimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07543082562999855432noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19305198.post-15339253418424177472021-01-24T14:21:54.962-05:002021-01-24T14:21:54.962-05:00Does an epiphany count as a mystical experience? ...Does an epiphany count as a mystical experience? I can say that there are times when my conscience speaks so clear and loud that it's as if God were shouting in my face, practically daring me to pretend I didn't know what was happening.Texan99https://www.blogger.com/profile/10479561573903660086noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19305198.post-26432971253971751202021-01-23T18:43:06.710-05:002021-01-23T18:43:06.710-05:00Don't blame the Teacher.
